Gotta Get Up to Get Down

Today, Scott has the cure for what ails you.

I apologize for the lengthy delay between blog posts. While excuses range from vacationing in Florida to studying for the SATs, the real reason is that I am just now getting over a rather brutal experience. You see, it has been approximately 28 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes, at time of writing, since I saw my favorite sports team go down on home-ice to lose the Stanley Cup. In overtime. Just recently have the black-and-blue psychological marks begun to fade and I am starting to return to sports, watching a little ESPN here, some of the NHL draft there. The reason I am telling you this is because of the significant place music took in helping me come to. Particularly helpful was the most beautiful melancholy piece I know, Adagio for Strings Op. 11. I highly recommend it if you have the patience even if you are not the biggest classical music fan. It is a great song to play with the lights dimmed after any poignant experience.

Also helpful was Alexi Murdoch’s Orange Sky. I have always found music to be a great way to cope after a tough moment and it most certainly did not fail me this time.

What songs do you listen to when you are down? Just so this post does not come off completely depressing - have you heard Joan Armatrading? Armatrading, who recently played in DC, is the first female U.K. artist to have debuted at number 1 in the billboard charts, and has a voice as pleasant as melted chocolate. She has that soothing quality that Simon and Garfunkle exercised so magnificently. Highly recommended. Stay well and avoid the heat.

  2. P.S. Speaking of Adagio-have you ever watched the film, Platoon? This song always makes me think of the incredibly upsetting scene during wartime. Amazing. Speaking of films--please tell me your have seen Almost Famous!
