Sending Out an S.O.S.

Look, I'm a cynical bastard. I'm not a joiner or a group-think type person. I played sports when I was in high school but I wouldn't even cheer at my own pep-rallies. In short, I don't join causes. In my last post, my advice was to turn off the TV, drink and listen to music, but in watching all this Haiti coverage, I must say, that's terrible advice. A country just off of the coast of our own has been utterly devastated. Some reports say that the death toll could total over half-a-million people. I don't even know how to comprehend that. The only catasrophe that even comes close to this one is the tsunami but some how I can't help but feel more connected to this - I guess because it's so damn close to home and maybe it reminds me of New Orleans in some way (although the damage in New Orleans was like a pothole compared to this).

Today we are taking a break from our normal music coverage and urging you to go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/ and find out the ways you can help, or, to make a musical connection to this, go to Wyclef Jean's highly reputable organization http://www.yele.org/ which has been featured on 60 minutes for its great work in Haiti.

UPDATE: It seems one of the most effective ways to donate is to text the word "haiti" to 90999. It will automatically make a $10 donation to the Red Cross that will be charged to your phone bill. Hilary Clinton mentioned this morning that they had raised 3 million so far (she said this on TV by the way, not to me personally).

If you have other suggestions, please let us know in the comments section.

Text "Haiti" to 90999 = $10 donation to American Red Cross Rescue and Relief of that country. Donation is included in your cellphone bill.
