Out of the Darkness and Into the Fire

The first decade of the new millennium has been kind of a downer. The whole thing started off with the massive fear of our society breaking down due to a computer glitch, and while that never happened, our anxiety was well-founded. Just a year-and-a-half later our lives were altered forever by the horrendous 9/11 attacks. Just when we had the entire world sympathetically behind us, we alienated pretty much all of planet Earth by attacking... pretty much all of planet Earth. While it hasn't been all bad (we did elect a thoughtful black man instead of a pissed off old guy and his feisty pet barracuda) we were reminded this Christmas that travelling by plane still means keeping an eye out for people who want to blow us all into little airborne pieces, which is a poetic but not optimistic ending to the decade.

Yet, if I were asked to name only one great thing about the decade, hands down, I'd answer - the music. Not only have we seen some amazing bands and musicians these last ten years (Radiohead, Outkast, M.I.A., Arcade Fire, White Stripes - just to name a fraction of a percent) but we now have the ability to carry all of them with us wherever we go (iPod!) and watch live performances or music videos whenever we want (MTV! Just kidding - Youtube!).

We've been through some shit America, but damned if we haven't had an excellent soundtrack along the way. We've got issues to deal with to be sure - the environment, Afghanistan, The Real Housewives of Atlanta - but we've proven ourselves pretty flinty folks. We can do this. Barring nuclear destruction or a depraved army of more efficient underwear bombers, I'm feeling pretty good about the next decade. I'm reaching back to a song made last year to bring in my optimism about the next ten (see below). But if things do get worse, I can promise you one thing - we'll have some great music to listen to while the ship sinks.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I'm impressed, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that's both equally educative and entertaining, and
without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which
not enough people are speaking intelligently about.
I'm very happy that I came across this in my hunt for something regarding this.
