Best Songs of 2009

In our theme of completely giving in and playing up this end of the year/decade thing, we jumped further onto a very crowded bandwagon and give you now, our favorite songs of 2009.

10.) Jeff Mangum - "Sign the Dotted Line"
Yeah, it's a cover and yeah it's pretty simple but if Jeff Mangum would have released an album of himself puking into a bag, one of those tracks would've made it on my list. But this song just so happens to be great!

9.) Girls - "Lust for Life"
Turns out that junkies who were raised in cults make wonderful music.

8.) Telekinesis - "Coast of Carolina"
If Death Cab for Cutie weren't so damn wimpy they might make music like this.

7.) Passion Pit - "Sleepyhead"
How can such a fun song sound so desperate?

6.) Dead Man's Bones - "My Body's a Zombie For You"
If you would have told us at the beginning of the year that the star of The Notebook would write a bunch of songs about ghosts and zombies and that they would be awesome... actually we probably would've believed you. That does sound pretty cool.

5.) Phoenix - "Lisztomania"
We probably would've picked "1901" as their best song but despite it being the norm these days, we're still adverse to songs used for car commercials.

4.) Dirty Projectors & David Byrne - "Knottypine"
Best collaboration of the year - one is silver and the other's gold.

3.) St. Vincent - "The Strangers"
Sufjan Steven's back up cheerleader puts out a sonically stunning record. The pupil has become the master.

2.) Grizzly Bear - "Two Weeks"
The one song this year that I absolutely could not get out of my head. For that reason it also kind of makes me mad which is why it isn't our number one choice.

1.) Animal Collective - "My Girls"
This song would sound amazing on drugs except for the fact that the lyrics would make you want to stop doing them immediately and get your life together. All Panda Bear (lead vocalist on this track) wants to do is provide a nice life for his daughter and his wife. Nothing more, nothing less. Easily one of the sweetest songs ever written.
